The ancient Chinese YIN-YANG scholars believed that there are two natural, complementary and contradictory forces in our universe. The scholars named them as YIN and YANG. YIN represents the female, negative, darkness, softness, moisture, night-time, even numbers and docile aspects of things. YANG represents the male, positive, brightness, hardness, dryness, day-time. odd numbers and dominant aspects. YIN and YANG are continually in the state of flux and always looking for the BALANCE point. One moves , the other responses. Therefore, ancient scholars treated this natural phenomenon as a natural   universal law.
中国古代道家认为，宇宙存在着两个互为矛盾的力量，并将其命名为阴和阳。阴代表雌性、消极、黑暗、柔软、潮湿、黑夜、偶数和顺从。阳代表雄性、积极、明亮、力量、干燥、白天、奇数和主导。阴阳此消彼涨，趋向于平衡。其中一个发生变化，另一个也会随着变化。因此，道家们把这种现象称之为自然界的规律。
These scholars also believed that our universe consisted of five basic elements, which are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth (Soil). Everything, including humans, in the universe (between Heaven and Earth) must have a relationship with these five elements. So they tried to apply the five elements not only to every physical thing in the world, but also to the Colors, Directions, Seasons and Sounds. They even applied to the Years, Months, Days, Hours, Minutes and Seconds of the  Chinese Calendar.
他们还认为，我们的宇宙是由五个基本要素构成的，即金，水，木，火，土。宇宙中的一切事物，包括人类都与这五种元素有关系。因此他们用这五种元素去试图理解每一样东西，例如：颜色，方向，季节和声音。他们甚至把这五种元素应用到了中国年历中的年，月，日，时，分，秒中。
FIVE ELEMENTS does not only mean metal, water, wood, fire and soil. The "element" in Chinese also means MOVEMENT, CHANGEABLE and DEVELOPMENT. These elements have their Ying and Yang sides too. They are moving, waning, waxing and changing all the time. Just like Ying and Yang, the movements of five elements are slow and stable when they are in kind of balance. If they are out of balance, then the movements are unstable and unpredictable. When a person is in a stable (five-element) environment, he should live peacefully. When a person is in an unpredictable environment, he is easily out of control.
五行并不仅仅意味着金，水，木，火，土。同时也意味着运动、变化、发展。这些元素中的每一个元素也都有阴阳两个方面。他们无时无刻都在运动、变化、发展着。同阴和阳一样，如果这五种元素是处于平衡状态，那么他们的运动就处于缓慢而稳定的状态，如果这五种元素处于不稳定的状态，那么他们的运动就是不稳定的，而且环境是不可预测的。如果人处于一种不可预测的环境之中，那么就很容易生病。
